UCSD Defeats PLNC on Last-Second Shot

Rick Batt drove the lane and made a short hook shot with one second left in overtime to give the UC San Diego men’s basketball team a 69-68 victory over Point Loma Nazarene Thursday night.

UCSD, which overcame a 10-point halftime deficit, held a three-point lead near the end of regulation, but Ron Hubbard hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left to pull PLNC (6-16) into a 64-64 tie.

UCSD improved to 16-4.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego lost to host Portland, 64-54, in a West Coast Conference game.

Freshman center Chris Enger scored 13 points, grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds and blocked four shots for USD (12-8, 2-5), but it wasn’t enough.

Missy Smith and Amy Reinebach each scored 23 for Portland (7-11, 3-4).

Cal State Long Beach scored 53 points in the first half en route to a 94-63 Big West Conference victory over San Diego State. Long Beach (15-4, 8-1) had five players in double figures. Julie Evans scored 30 for SDSU (4-17, 3-7).

FOOTBALL

Thousand Oaks’ Steve Rudisill, an all-Ventura County safety, has orally committed to San Diego State. Rudisill, who has a sister who attends SDSU, also visited Oregon State and New Mexico. He said he may red-shirt this fall.

Two Times’ All-County first-team defensive selections have made verbal commitments to Cal.

Mission Bay’s Dareke Fleming, a two-way lineman and heavyweight wrestler, chose the Golden Bears over Arizona State, Colorado and SDSU. El Camino linebacker Ricky Spears, expected to play safety in college, was recruited by UCLA and Army.

Other local players committing were Morse running back Jessie Campbell (Pacific); Crawford wide receiver Vernon Shaver (Utah); El Camino defensive back Jerry Avery (Northern Arizona), and El Camino tight end Adam Savona (Azusa Pacific).

CREW

Doug Perez, former SDSU and UC Santa Barbara coach, will replace Brent Rushell as the Aztec men’s coach. Rushell headed the program for 18 months. Perez was at UCSB last year and had headed national developmental camps in the west. He coached at SDSU from 1978-1985.

BASEBALL

USD opened its season with a 10-3 exhibition victory against the Spanish national team at Cunningham Stadium. The Toreros led, 5-2, then broke open the game with a five-run seventh inning. Jack Molina, a USD assistant, coaches the Spanish team.
