Bill Smith Appointed City Manager

Bill Smith, assistant city manager in Monterey since 1986, has been appointed city manager in Manhattan Beach effective June 4.
Smith, 49, replaces Dave Thompson, who retired this week after 16 years in the post.
Before working in Monterey, Smith was city administrator in Sonora, Calif. A native of New York, he spent 20 years in the Marine Corps and served three tours of duty in Vietnam before beginning a career in municipal government.
Smith will be paid $84,000 a year.
