Wayne Gretzky, the NHL’s most valuable player in nine of the last 10 seasons, was not nominated for the 1989-90 award, losing out to Boston’s Ray Bourque, St. Louis’ Brett Hull and Edmonton’s Mark Messier.
However, Gretzky was nominated for the Lady Byng Trophy for good sportsmanship, which he won in 1979-80. Hull and Pat LaFontaine of the New York Islanders also were nominated for the Byng.
