Wright Signs for Summer as a Nomad

Paul Wright, who recently helped the Sockers to their eighth indoor title in his second year in the MISL, has signed to play outdoors with the Nomads.

Wright was joined by Arturo Velazco, an alternate with the Sockers this past season, and Steve Sharp, formerly of the Los Angeles Heat, in signing with the Nomads earlier this week.

Wright was named the MISL championship series’ unsung hero following the Sockers’ victory over Baltimore.

Wright has played the past four summers with the Nomads and last year was named most valuable player when the Nomads defeated the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks for the Western Soccer League title.

This will be Velazco’s fifth season with the Nomads.

All three of the recent signees will play for the Nomads (4-6, 35 points, fourth place in the South division) at 7:30 Saturday night when they play host to the expansion Colorado Foxes (7-4, 58 points, first place in the North division) at Southwestern College.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Jennifer Torns, a Mt. Carmel High graduate, has been selected to play on the North squad at the U.S. Olympic Festival July 6-15 in Minneapolis. Torns will be a junior at William & Mary in September.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Aby Brayton, a USD tennis player, received the 1990 unsung player of the year award from World Tennis Magazine. Brayton was 16-11 in singles play for the Toreras and finished as the 36th-ranked player in the nation.

TRACK AND FIELD

An abbreviated all-comers meet will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at UCSD. The pole vault will be the only field event. Running events include the 100, 400, 800 and 1,500 meters. If there are enough entrants, other distances will be added. The cost is $2 per event.

BASEBALL

Miah Bradbury, a former Mt. Carmel High catcher, signed a minor league baseball contract with the Miami Miracles of the Florida State League. Bradbury, who batted .351 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs in his just-completed senior season at Loyola Marymount, received a $20,000 signing bonus and the standard $850-per-month contract.
