World IN BRIEF : NICARAGUA : Contras Declare End to War, Will Disarm

Nicaragua’s Contra rebels formally declared an end to their eight-year war, and top rebel commanders will lay down their rifles Wednesday, a government statement said. “The (Contra) high command has formally declared the end to the armed struggle,” the statement, read over official Radio Nicaragua, said. Contra chiefs will hand over their weapons in the town of San Pedro de Lovago, about 84 miles east of Managua, the statement said. A total of 16,642 rebels have been demobilized so far, U.N. officials said in Managua.
