SIDELINES : Probe Shows Limited Gambling

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State Athletic Director Larry Templeton says no coaches or full-time athletic department employees took part in gambling ring activities on the university campus.
A three-week investigation into gambling in the athletic department also showed that fewer than 12 former athletes bet on games or acted as debt collectors for a bookmaker, Templeton said late Monday.
Templeton said the only athletic department employees involved were two students working part-time--one as a proctor in the athletic dormitory and one as a student trainer on the school’s basketball team.
University officials opened the investigation after a Mississippi State professor and a former student pleaded guilty to federal charges related to bookmaking. The two incidents were not connected, authorities said.
The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. is not investigating the matter, Templeton said, but he has been in contact with NCAA officials.
