Major Carlsbad Development OKd

The Carlsbad City Council has accepted plans by the Fieldstone Co. to develop 1,076 homes on 529 acres in La Costa, the largest residential project approved there in recent years.
The council’s 4-1 vote after hours of testimony Tuesday night allows construction to begin in 1993 on land east of El Camino Real, north of Olivenhain Road and west of Rancho Santa Fe Road.
Homes in the Arroyo La Costa project are expected to be priced between $290,000 and $450,000.
About 150 residents from the Rancho Ponderosa area of La Costa crowded the council meeting, many of them telling the council that streets shouldn’t be built connecting their neighborhood with Arroyo La Costa because heavy traffic would pose a safety hazard.
The development includes two school sites, a potential church site and 6 miles of trails within 135 acres of open space.
Councilman Mark Pettine, a slow-growth supporter, was the lone vote against the project, which has been in the planning stages for 3 1/2 years.
