PREP ROUNDUP : No. 1 Corona del Mar Routs Sunny Hills in Water Polo, 17-4

FULLLERTON — OK, so Corona del Mar High School is the No. 1-ranked team in Orange County and Sunny Hills is only No. 8. But who would have thought Corona del Mar would win by a score of 17-4 when the two met Saturday at Independence Park?

“Sunny Hills is a lot better than the score showed today,” said Ryan Weir, Corona del Mar two-meter man. “They’ve got some good players and they’re just as physical as us, but we were able to counterattack pretty well.”

In truth, Corona del Mar (11-0) did everything and did it better than pretty well.

Weir led all scorers with six goals and scored them almost every way you can in a swimming pool. One on a four-meter penalty shot, two on counterattacks, one from six meters and two from the two-meter position.

Sunny Hills (5-5) looked as if it would give Corona del Mar some problems early in the game. Brad Winters gave Sunny Hills a 1-0 lead a minute 10 seconds into the game. Weir’s penalty shot tied it a minute later, but Mike Thompson scored with 3:05 left in the first quarter to give Sunny Hills a 2-1 advantage.

“We seem to start out slowly,” Corona del Mar goalie Robbie Pike said. “We seem to take a while to adjust.”

But that was the game for Sunny Hills. Corona del Mar outscored them, 16-2, from that point on.
