Bell-Jeff 14, St. Genevieve 13--The Guards won their first game of the season in a sloppy afternoon game at Burroughs High despite committing four turnovers on their first five possessions.
Bell-Jeff (1-7, 1-1) scored on the opening kickoff. The Valiants’ Tom Nickels shanked the kick, pushing the ball only a few yards downfield. Bell-Jeff’s Richard Samkow scooped it up and ran 45 yards untouched for the score.
The Guards were successful on an ensuing onside kick, but Nestor Villanea fumbled on their first play. Three plays later, St. Genevieve quarterback Bobby Kite threw an interception--one of his three--but Villanea fumbled again.
The teams combined for 10 turnovers, including five in the first quarter.
Kite, who doubles as a Valiant defensive back, returned a second-quarter interception 35 yards for a touchdown and a 13-7 St. Genevieve lead.
Bell-Jeff quarterback Anthony Pawluc connected with Alfred Silva on a six-yard scoring strike with 1:32 left in the third quarter for the winning points.
