In the Clutch, Fountain Valley Quarterback Comes Through

WESTMINSTER — Ryan Bertoni got the breaks he needed in the final 5:51 and the junior quarterback passed Fountain Valley High School to a 22-21 upset victory over Marina Friday night at Westminster High.
Bertoni, who completed two critical fourth-down passes, hooked up with B.J. Crabtree on a seven-yard scoring pass in the final 2:19 to close the gap to 21-20. Fountain Valley (1-9, 1-5) took the lead and the victory on Bertoni’s two-point conversion pass to Marcos Diaz.
Marina (6-4, 3-3) took a 21-14 lead on quarterback Cristin McLemore’s second touchdown in the final 5:59. On Fountain Valley’s ensuing possession, Bertoni completed fourth-down passes of 14 yards to Crabtree and 12 yards to Diaz, coming back two plays after the latter to hit Crabtree for the victory.
