COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Women Runners Make State Finals

The Orange Coast College women’s cross-country team qualified for the state finals with a fifth-place finish in the Southern California Regional race Friday at Irvine Regional Park.
El Camino won with 57 points. Mt. San Antonio (86) was second, Moorpark (92) third, Riverside (95) fourth and OCC (99) fifth in the 15-team field. They will join the top five teams from the Northern California regionals in the state championship meet next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Suzanne Castruita of Mt. SAC won the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes 8 seconds. OCC’s Christy Shelton (18:24) was seventh, and teammate Mari Benavides (19:07) was 11th.
Mt. SAC won the men’s race with 58 points. Long Beach (72) was second, El Camino (105) third, Glendale (107) fourth and Grossmont (137) fifth. OCC (215) was ninth. Allan Garcia of Glendale won the four-mile race in 19:16. Cypress’ Isaac Silva (20:20) was the top Orange County finisher in eighth.
