Black’s 4 Touchdowns, 219 Yards Lift Camp Kilpatrick, 34-17

Camp Kilpatrick’s Michael Black scored four touchdowns and rushed for 219 yards in 22 carries to pace the Mustangs to a 34-17 victory over Leffingwell Christian in a Southern Section Division X quarterfinal playoff game Friday night at Excelsior High.

The score was tied, 14-14, at halftime despite three first-half turnovers by the Mustangs.

But Camp Kilpatrick (8-3-1) tightened its defense and its grip on the ball in the second half, scoring 20 consecutive points to put the game away.

“Three months ago, we never thought we’d be this far,” Camp Kilpatrick Coach Sean Porter said.

On Leffingwell Christian’s second possession of the second half, however, Andre Robinson kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Lions a 17-14 lead.

Camp Kilpatrick had possession for less than two minutes in the third quarter, but Black scored on a 54-yard run to give the Mustangs a 21-17 lead.

The final quarter belonged to Black.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior scored his third touchdown of the game on a nine-yard run, after rushing for 62 of the Mustangs’ 75 yards in a three-minute drive.

Black then intercepted a pass from Robinson and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown with 1 minute 2 seconds remaining.

Although Black was outstanding in the backfield, Leffingwell Christian had the more productive back in Allen Le Cour, who rushed for 231 yards in 24 carries.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Black’s 67-yard run on Camp Kilpatrick’s second play of the game.

But six minutes later, Leffingwell Christian (7-3) drove 75 yards in 11 plays and scored on Le Cour’s three-yard dive.

The Lions benefited from a roughing-the-kicker penalty on the point-after, and Le Cour carried for the two-point conversion and an 8-6 lead.

The Lions scored again on their first possession of the second quarter when Le Cour raced 75 yards down the sideline for his second touchdown.

The Mustangs countered midway in the second quarter when Rafael Sarabia hit a wide-open Kenneth Young with a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Bobby Wilson’s run for the two-point conversion tied the score at 14-14.
