TOKYO — With more money in their pockets and more leisure time, Japanese are traveling abroad in record numbers, and the United States is the most popular tourist spot, the Japan National Tourist Organization said today.
At the end of November, 10 million Japanese had already traveled abroad, which was more than the 9.66 million for all of 1989. JNTO said the 1990 number could reach 11 million, with as much as $32.4 billion spent on overseas travel, including air fares.
The number of Japanese overseas travelers jumped 13.5% to 8.32 million from last January to September, up from 7.33 million in the same period a year ago, the tourist group said.
Japanese are expected to spend about $10 billion in the United States this year.
