PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Supporters of a charismatic, leftist priest took to the streets today to dance and cheer in anticipation of his election victory. Police fired into one crowd, killing a pregnant woman, witnesses said.
The reported violence occurred as the people of this poor Caribbean nation awaited results from Sunday’s vote for what could be the first freely elected government in Haiti’s turbulent 186-year history.
The witnesses said six policemen firing from a moving pickup truck shot at hundreds of people singing a patriotic song outside the gutted remains of the St. Jean Bosco Church in the La Salines slum of the capital.
One witness, photographer Lannis Waters of the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post, said the truck ran over the slain woman’s body.
