Soweto Faces Eight Rivals in Debut on Main Track

Soweto, an English import, makes his first start on dirt and breaks from the outside today against eight opponents in the Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita.
Soweto won on grass at Hollywood Park in his last start. Also in the field is Sew Predictable, who finished fourth in the Los Feliz Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 11.
In 1986, the Santa Catalina was won by Ferdinand, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby.
