Area Clinics Offer Low-Cost Services
After reading the article in the Feb. 10 issue of the Metro/South Bay section of The Times regarding the opening of a new Planned Parenthood Clinic in Torrance, I was concerned that the reader could be left with the impression that there was little low-cost health care available in the South Bay.
In fact, except for abortions, these services have been offered by several clinics in the South Bay for more than 20 years. South Bay Free Clinic alone provided almost 30,000 client visits last year from facilities in Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Gardena, at no cost to our clients. South Bay Free Clinic’s services include not only birth control, prenatal care, cancer screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, but also pediatrics, anonymous HIV testing, mental health counseling, dental care, legal assistance and health education. While new health care facilities may be news, it is important not to forget the clinics that have served and continue to serve the South Bay community.
