The Cal State Dominguez Hills basketball team kept its postseason playoff hopes alive with a dramatic 70-68 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Carson.
Mike Moore, shooting over the out-stretched arms of two Broncos, made a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to win the game. He was mobbed by his teammates at midcourt after the shot.
Ray Bennett scored a season-high 23 points to lead Dominguez Hills.
The Toros, who lost Friday night to UC Riverside, 74-68, have yet to win a Friday game against a CCAA opponent. The Toros are 0-6 against CCAA teams on Friday and 1-7 overall. But the Toros have not lost a conference game and are 14-3 for the season on Saturday nights.
Dominguez Hills must defeat visiting Cal State Bakersfield Friday night and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo must lose one of its two remaining games for the Toros to advance the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. postseason tournament.
Despite losing Saturday night to San Luis Obispo, 90-75, Bakersfield is in first place in the CCAA. The Roadrunners defeated the Toros, 78-62, in the team’s first meeting.
Saturday night Dominguez Hills held a 13-2 lead, but Pomona, playing without the CCAA’s leading scorer, Terry Ross, whittled away at the lead and trailed, 38-33, at half.
Ross, who averages 24 points a game, sat out the first half after missing both the team shoot-around and bus to Dominguez Hills. He finished with 18 points. Andre Harrell, a former standout at Inglewood High, led Pomona with 19 points. Marcellus Lee, who transferred to Pomona from Loyola Marymount, scored eight points.
In the women’s game, Cheri Bullet and Karee Bonde scored 16 points each, but the Lady Toros lost, 66-55, to Cal Poly Pomona. The loss eliminated the Lady Toros from postseason play. The 13th-ranked Lady Broncos (17-7, 8-0) wrapped up their 10th consecutive CCAA title.
On Friday Dominguez Hills (15-10, 2-7) lost at UC Riverside.
