Two San Diego men--one stabbed and another shot Wednesday night in unrelated downtown incidents about half an hour apart--were both listed in good condition Thursday, officials said.

Carlos Francisco, described as being a San Diego resident in his early 30s, was stabbed several times in the lower back and abdomen about 10:30 p.m. at the 400 West C St. trolley stop after he refused to give two teen-agers his portable radio, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

Several hours later, two boys, ages 16 and 17, were arrested at 15th and J streets in connection with the attack. In their possession, Cohen said, were a portable radio with Francisco’s name engraved on it and blood-stained knives. It was not determined whether the knives were the same ones used in the attack, Cohen said.

Francisco was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was reported in good condition Thursday.

Half an hour before the attack on Francisco, Gary Cantrell, 29, a downtown resident, was confronted by five youths in front of 701 C St. and was shot once in the right thigh with a small-caliber handgun, Cohen said.

He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, said Michael Scahill, a hospital spokesman said.

No arrests have been made and no motive has been established for the attack, but the police gang unit is investigating.
