TENNIS ROUNDUP : Sampras Strains Hamstring, Retires in the Second Set

Pete Sampras strained his left hamstring and retired in the second set of a third-round match against Mark Koevermans in the Volvo indoor tennis tournament Thursday night at Memphis, Tenn.
Sampras, ranked No. 5 in the world and seeded second in this tournament, led, 6-2, 1-1.
Sampras was hurt early in the first set, said Bob Russo, Assn. of Tennis Professionals trainer. Sampras had the leg taped but was unable to continue for fear of making the injury worse, Russo said.
Russo said Sampras will probably be able to play within a few days.
In other matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl beat Paul Haarhuis, 6-2, 6-1; defending champion Michael Stich defeated Mats Wilander, 6-3, 6-3; Michael Chang beat Grant Connell, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4; Christiano Caratti of Italy defeated Tim Mayotte, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, and Jeff Tarango beat No. 14 Wally Masur of Australia, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Stefan Edberg of Sweden, the world’s top-ranked player, struggled past Omar Camporese of Italy, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9), in the Eurocard tournament at Stuttgart, Germany.
In other second-round matches, Guy Forget of France beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3); Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia defeated Christian Bergstrom of Sweden, 6-1, 6-3; Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union upset fifth-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-4, 6-4, and Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands defeated Sergi Bruguera of Spain, 6-2, 6-3.
