Edberg, Agassi Head Indian Wells Field

INDIAN WELLS — Stefan Edberg and Andre Agassi are the top seeded players in the $1-million Newsweek Champions Cup beginning today at Hyatt Grand Champions.
Boris Becker, who injured his thigh while playing a tournament in Brussels last month, is one of four players forced to withdraw from the event because of injury. The others are Brad Gilbert, Aaron Krickstein and Jay Berger.
Edberg starts his third consecutive week ranked No. 1. He gets a bye, then plays a second-round match against either Martin Jaite or David Wheaton.
Seven of the top 10 ranked players are here, including No. 7 Goran Ivanisevic, a wild card.
Other top 20 players are No. 5 Guy Forget, No. 6 Pete Sampras, No. 9 Thomas Muster, No. 10 Emilio Sanchez, No. 11 Andres Gomez, No. 14 Michael Chang, No. 15 Andrei Cherkasov, No. 18 Michael Stitch, No. 19 John McEnroe and No. 20 Alexander Volkov.
