SANTA CLARA — St. Mary’s College, 4-9 when Dave Fehte took over in his first head-coaching assignment, will play for the West Coast Conference tournament championship tonight against Pepperdine.
The Gaels rallied for a 75-72 semifinal victory over the University of San Diego at Santa Clara’s Toso Pavilion.
Fehte, 30, is an interim coach, but that might soon change after the Gaels (13-16) advanced to their first WCC final in the five-year history of the tournament.
Thurman Watson led the Gaels with 21 points. Kelvin Woods also had 21 for San Diego (17-12).
