In a matchup of two of the Western State Conference baseball tri-champions from last season, College of the Canyons beat visiting Moorpark, 10-3, Tuesday. Canyons sophomore right-hander Chad Phillips (2-2) carried a shutout into the ninth inning en route to his first complete game.
“Phillips, when he had to, pitched pretty darn good,” Canyons Coach Len Mohney said.
Canyons (9-9-1, 6-0 in WSC play) scored three runs off Moorpark right-hander Mike Jenkins (4-2), the starter and loser, and then battered reliever Rob Teasdale with a pair of three-run home runs. Teasdale had not allowed an earned run this season when he entered the game in the seventh. However, Canyons’ Robert Barrena hit a towering home run, his second of the season, in the seventh, and Scott Roth hit his second, a drive to left, in the eighth.
Roth also had a single and a double and drove in five runs.
Moorpark (8-10, 0-5) continued to struggle offensively and had only two hits before breaking through with three runs in the ninth.
