John Andretti took over the lead on the 61st lap when Rick Mears crashed, then held on for his first Indy-car victory in the inaugural Gold Coast Indy, at Surfer’s Paradise, Australia.
Andretti raced with the leaders all day on the 2.793-mile circuit, beating Bobby Rahal to the finish line by 12.7 seconds, with Mears third, very nearly catching Rahal on the final lap. Andretti won $118,625, averaging 81.950 m.p.h. in the 65-lap, 181.545-mile race.
