UCSD’s Marshall Honored as District Coach of Year

Tom Marshall, UC San Diego’s men’s basketball coach, was chosen as one of the 1991 Kodak District Coaches of the Year by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches.

Marshall, who coached the Tritons to a 23-4 finish and to the Division III sectional semifinals, was chosen from the West region. In eight years as UCSD’s coach, Marshall has compiled a 125-87 record.

The National Coaches of the Year for each division will be selected by the NABC and will be announced March 31.

AMERICA’S CUP

Bill Koch’s America-3 syndicate has moved into its new compound on upper San Diego Bay to continue preparations for the America’s Cup.

The two-acre site at 4960 North Harbor Blvd., sub-leased from the Port of San Diego, is the former Bay City Marine facility that has been idle in recent years.

America-3 has been training out of a temporary base on a barge at the 10th Avenue shipping terminal, using a new International America’s Cup Class boat bought from the French syndicate.

“We’re so much closer to the ocean here that our crew will be able to train about 45 minutes more a day, rather than spending that time being towed out there,” said Carl Lessard, director of operations.

America-3’s own first boat--built secretly at the Hercules Aerospace plant in Utah, it was revealed this week--is scheduled to arrive in April and will be sailed in the IACC World Championships in May. A second boat being built at Bristol, R.I. is scheduled to arrive in June.

“We can definitely handle three boats here,” Lessard said.
