World IN BRIEF : ALBANIA : Communists Gain Two-Thirds Majority
- Share via
The Communists gained a crucial two-thirds majority in the first freely elected Parliament in decades, according to final results from Sunday’s run-off election. The Party of Labor now has 168 seats in the 250-member Parliament, which gives it a free hand with legislation and making constitutional changes. Six Communist candidates, including Prime Minister Fatos Nano, won seats. The opposition Democratic Party captured 10 seats, giving it a total of 75 seats in Parliament and a secondary role. The second round was held in districts where no candidate got more than 50% of the vote in the March 31 elections.
