School District Tax Criticized
The La Canada Flintridge School District is going to try again to pass a parcel tax. What does a piece of property have to do with schools?
The only reason property is used as a basis for taxation is that if you do not pay the tax, your property is confiscated. The bottom line is that it is the easiest tax to collect.
The elderly and those who are retired are being taxed out of their property. Property taxes should pay for property-related matters only, in the community they are collected from, and only for public protection--police and fire departments.
Gasoline taxes pay for the roads and highways. I filled up my car this morning and the price of gas was $1.019 per gallon. The tax on that gallon was 34 cents and the cost of the gas was 68 cents for a tax rate of 50%.
If the users of the roads pay a tax to use the roads, then the users of the schools can pay a tax to use the schools. Put on the ballot Nov. 5 for a vote by the people: “Property taxes will pay for public protection only in the community they are collected from.”
