BOOM AND BUST: Some remains of the 19th-Century Silverado silver mining boom can still be found (B1), but a nearby coal mining boom town of the same era has disappeared. . . . Called Carbondale, the coal town sprang up in 1878 along what is now called Silverado Canyon Road, near Ladd Canyon. At its peak, Carbondale had about 200 residents, a boarding house, school, saloon and post office. . . . But when it ran out of coal in 1884, so did the residents.
