Complaining because David Letterman was bypassed in favor of Jay Leno as “The Tonight Show” (NBC) host when Johnny Carson departs next May, critic Tom Shales argues that Letterman is much the funnier of the two (TV Times, June 23). Yes, he concedes, “Dave can be irritating . . . rude to the little people who haven’t yet joined the celebrity class.” (Leno, conversely, is known for courtesy to guests as well as to the public-at-large.)
Nevertheless, Mr. Shales warns us, “If Dave leaves television, I leave television.”
Question: Where do we send the farewell cards for both men?
