Give Bicyclists a Break
Bicyclists on mountain bikes are being run out of the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, as they have in Griffith Park. Hikers and horse riders have all the land to themselves, with “Keep Out” signs for all bicyclists.
Kids with nothing to do are looting, killing, burglarizing, destroying property etc. because there is no outlet for them. Bicycling through the hills and mountains is an economical way to engage them in something fun and constructive. Carving roads for them in the mountains, hills and the Los Angeles River channel is an outlet for them.
Mountain bikes do not pollute. They are quiet. The tire tracks are no worse than horses hoofs on trails.
We should have a mountain area with a small admission fee for bikers to spend the day, offering races and stunts for individuals and clubs.
At 74 years of age, I ride a bicycle from 50 to 70 miles a week, mostly in the hills and up Griffith Park Mountain to the Observatory.
Mountain bikes are at the bottom of the totem pole. You can give them a break now or pay later.
