HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In a battle of Pacific 10 Conference golfers, Amy Fruhwirth defeated Heidi Voorhees, 5 and 4, Saturday to win the 1991 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Fruhwirth, who earned medalist honors during stroke-play qualifying earlier in the week, enjoyed a lead of 3-up after 18 holes in the morning.
She then birdied four holes in succession in the afternoon to take a commanding lead, and the match concluded on the 32nd hole of the match.
Fruhwirth, who is from Oxnard but now lives in Phoenix, played on the 1990 NCAA champion Arizona State squad. Voorhees, of Valley Village, Calif., attends USC.
Fruhwirth had defeated Martha Leach of Austin, Tex., and Voorhees defeated Martha Lang of Geneva, Ill., in the semifinals.
