The Capistrano Unified School District has hired a principal from a neighboring district for its new position of director of curriculum and instruction.
Barbara F. Smith, 49, who had been principal at Serrano Intermediate School in the Saddleback Valley Unified District since 1987, was appointed to the position by the Board of Trustees this week. She will be paid $71,998 a year.
She is being replaced at Serrano by Catherine Kane, who was assistant principal at El Toro High School.
