The City Council has approved spending $3,500 on a two-day workshop to improve relations between Downey Police Department management and disgruntled officers. A mediator will be present at the meeting, the date and site of which have not been set.
The workshop is part of a continuing effort by city officials to mend relations between Police Chief D. Clayton Mayes, his administrative staff and the department’s rank-and-file members.
Mayes and police union representatives first met with a mediator at a Long Beach hotel on July 15 to discuss the force’s internal problems but no firm agreements resulted from the meeting.
