German Communists Dismayed at Crisis

BERLIN — Leaders of the Communist Party that once ruled East Germany reacted with dismay and foreboding Monday as they watched the breakdown of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union.
Renamed the Party of Democratic Socialism after the 1989 democratic revolution that united East and West Germany, the party lamented the “undemocratic” barring of the Soviet party in some republics and warned against “a climate of intolerance and revenge.”
But the party also admitted it is being forced to rethink socialist ideology and ponder its own future. Officials said the party will hold a conference in September along with “other interest movements” to review developments in the Soviet Union.
