California’s water polo team won three games Saturday to advance to today’s semifinals of the prestigious UC Irvine water polo tournament at Corona del Mar High.
Chris Humbert and Eriks Krumins, Cal’s two first-team All-Americans, led the Golden Bears, who along with UCLA are the tournament’s only undefeated teams.
Humbert scored a series of rapid-fire goals that helped Cal to a six-goal halftime lead against highly ranked Pepperdine, and an eventual 9-4 victory. Humbert finished with five goals, three of them in the final three minutes of the first quarter. Cal also held Pepperdine’s two-meter man Geoff Clark to two goals.
Cal will meet Cal State Long Beach at 9:20 a.m. today in one semifinal. UCLA plays Stanford at 10:30 a.m. in the other.
The Golden Bears also defeated Fresno State, 12-5, and Stanford, 8-4.
