Only one senior--Thomason--is on the Heritage Christian squad, but Caldie is banking on the defensive skills of his young players to challenge for the Academy League title. “I think we should win it,” the second-year coach said. “We still have a lot of juniors and sophomores on the team, but we play a tough man-to-man defense. We are pretty physical and aggressive . . . Even though we finished last in the league last year, I thought we had the best defensive team. We just couldn’t get it done offensively.” The Patriots were winless in league play, so the thought of winning the championship over powerhouses such as Liberty Christian and St. Margaret’s might sound outrageous. But Caldie believes he’s got excellent firepower and hopes to get production from Zubas, Drabek, Thomason and Acheson, who averaged 17 points last year as a freshman. “They could score 25 points at any given game if they wanted to,” Caldie said. Dixon will be counted on to direct the Patriots’ newly installed running game. “This year we are putting in a fast-break offense to beat the other guys down the floor,” Caldie said. “We are probably the shortest team in the league, so we’ll have to try and run.”
