Red Cross Plans More Help for New States

GENEVA — The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Friday it is planning a world appeal to finance an expanded medical and food aid program for the former Soviet Union.
The Red Cross announced the appeal as its secretary general, Paer Staenbeck, flew to Moscow for talks with officials there.
The program will respond to “the acute shortage of medicines and basic medical supplies currently affecting medical institutions in the former Soviet republics,” a federation statement said.
It will also provide food for vulnerable sections of society, including the elderly and large families, and assistance for people forced from their homes by internal conflicts in the newly independent republics.
