California IN BRIEF : SANTA CLARA : Bid to Let Gays Into Scouting Rejected

From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Boy Scout leaders in Santa Clara County have rejected the idea of asking the group’s national leadership to admit homosexuals. The petition rejected by the 33-member Board of Directors would have expressed discontent with a national policy that excludes homosexuals as members or leaders. The vote tally in the closed meeting was not disclosed. The Bay Area chapter of United Way has asked the Boy Scouts to change its policy or risk losing $1.1 million in annual local contributions.
