Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent rejected Daniel R. McCarthy’s bid to become managing general partner of the New York Yankees on Friday and gave the team two weeks to designate a replacement.
“It is not in the best interests of baseball for Mr. McCarthy to be the permanent general partner of the Yankees,” Vincent said in a prepared statement. He would not elaborate.
McCarthy, a Cleveland tax lawyer and a close friend of Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, was proposed by the team on Dec. 31, the day Robert Nederlander resigned as managing general partner.
