UCLA Cites Songbook in Extending Fraternity’s Suspension by a Year

A UCLA fraternity that had already been suspended for a year for alcohol-related campus violations will be suspended a second year after distributing a songbook filled with lyrics involving sexual violence, UCLA officials have announced.

A controversy over the songbook arose last month when a copy of it, which had been distributed by Phi Kappa Psi to its winter pledges, was dropped off anonymously at the office of the campus feminist magazine Together.

Under the heading of “Raunchy Songs” were sexually explicit lyrics appearing to celebrate cannibalism, necrophilia and sexual torture of women using such instruments as cheese graters. Last year, the fraternity had signed a contract promising not to engage in sexist or anti-gay conduct.

“When the fraternity is willing to conduct its activities at an exemplary level over time, incorporating educational programming and university service, we will consider their petition for reinstatement,” Assistant Vice Chancellor Allen Yarnell said.
