BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Keough Recovery Is Coming Along

Angel pitcher Matt Keough, who underwent brain surgery after being struck by a foul ball during a spring training game in March, said Friday he was feeling no ill effects from the operation.

Keough, who was in contention for a spot in the starting rotation until the incident, will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging test on his skull Tuesday to measure the pace of his recovery.

Keough won’t establish a timeline for his possible return until after the MRI.

“That will determine if all my marbles are in the right order,” said Keough, 36. “I just hope everything’s all right, period.”

The Angels observed a moment of silence before Friday night’s game and will wear the initials “DJ” on their right shoulders for the rest of the season in memory of Deron Johnson, the former major leaguer and Angel batting instructor who died Friday after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Catcher John Orton was activated off the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned to triple-A Edmonton. He had been suffering from an inflamed right shoulder. . . . Left-handed reliever Scott Bailes (strained right hip) is scheduled to come off the disabled list Monday, and Rodgers said he will announce a roster move after Sunday’s game. Speculation about who will get demoted has centered on Scott Lewis, Julio Valera and Steve Frey, another left-handed reliever. “We have an idea, but someone might get hurt and change things,” Rodgers said. “You don’t want to make a decision like that until the last minute.” . . . An examination Thursday revealed that, as expected, Angel right-hander Don Robinson is suffering from an arthritic hip. Robinson, who was put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, got a cortisone shot Friday night and said he should be fine in two or three days. He wasn’t scheduled to start again until next Saturday in Cleveland. “Everyone in the bullpen is doing the job and they needed a roster spot, so I ended up going on the DL,” Robinson said. . . . The Mariners made a change in their pitching rotation for the three-game series, replacing Sunday’s scheduled starter, Rich DeLucia, with Erik Hanson.
