COSTA MESA — A 14-year-old girl died after being hit by a car as she and a girlfriend were jaywalking across Newport Boulevard from a coffeehouse, police said.
Elizabeth Leila Ferguson of Newport Beach was pronounced dead on arrival shortly after 10 p.m. Friday after paramedics took her to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
She and Heather Elaine Harris, 15, of Costa Mesa tried to cross Newport Boulevard near 17th Street about 9:30 p.m. and did not use the crosswalk, Officer Marty Ortiz said.
Randall Gregory Quan, 23, of Newport Beach was driving southbound on Newport when he saw the girls, he said.
He tried to miss them by swerving his car but was unsuccessful, Ortiz said.
Heather refused treatment for minor injuries, he said.
No citations have been issued. Police ask witnesses to contact Investigator Steve Rautus at (714) 754-5252.
