Mater Dei Makes Lewis an Assistant

Tom Lewis, a former standout basketball player at Mater Dei High School, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Monarchs, Coach Gary McKnight said Tuesday.
Lewis will be the team’s weight lifting coach and will also work with the post players. He was an assistant at St. John Bosco last season. The Braves finished 13-13 and advanced to the second round of the Southern Section II-AA playoffs.
Matt Turnbull, standout swimmer for Mission Viejo, will likely miss the Southern Section 4-A championships this weekend because of the chicken pox, Diablo Coach Mike Pelton said.
Turnbull, who reached the consolation finals last season, was considered one of the favorites in the event this year. He was also part of two relay teams.
Pelton said Turnbull’s status will be evaluated later in the week. The 4-A prelims are on Thursday and the finals on Friday.
