ON THE SURFACE

Why should I, a surfer and student with pride in our coastline and community, be denied the right to experience Lunada Bay (“Cliques,” by Danny Garcia, Palm Latitudes, May 3). I am concerned about the bay vandals’ values and mentality, which seem to be condoned and glorified in the article.
Gangs are gangs. They represent lawlessness, fear and social turmoil. Although breaking car windows, stealing car stereos, slashing tires and assaulting people are not as damaging as drive-by shootings, gang warfare and murder, the trend is the same.
What gives any one group the right to try to control one of the prettiest coastal strips in California with discriminatory and mindless gang-style tactics?
