Altadena : Radar Study for 3 Streets

Faced with a perceived increase in speeding, the Town Council reversed itself Tuesday, voting 10 to 1 to ask that the county conduct a six-month radar study of speeds on three Altadena streets.

Calling for a cost-effective use of the radar, Councilman Michael Murray withdrew his opposition, which had helped deadlock the council on a car-mounted radar program in November.

The proposal to install radar on portions of Altadena Drive, New York Drive and Fair Oaks Avenue met with objections in November when a county engineer explained that some speed limits would likely be raised after prevailing speeds are documented.

Murray pointed to staffing reductions in the state Highway Patrol, which may have made speeding more rampant on local streets. He said something has to be done to stop it.

The vote was the last official act of Murray’s term on the council.
