Steven Bochco Lays Down the Law : WHO’S HE KIDDING?
“I f I Ran a Network . . . ,” last Sunday’s commentary by television producer Steven Bochco (“Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law”) has prompted a heavy response from readers. A sampling:
If Steven Bochco could write TV shows as funny as his “solutions” for fixing TV, he’d have a huge hit.
While network executives clearly do not have a clue as to what they are doing, Bochco’s solutions would make things worse, if that is possible.
First, he thinks that new shows should all get 22-episode commitments. Steve, I hate to tell you, but we viewers could figure out after one or two showings that your “Cop Rock” and “Capital Critters” stunk.
Second, if you think TV is an art form, sell your products to A&E; or PBS. Network TV is a mass medium. We do not care what is important to you, the developer, or what you are passionate about. If you want a hit, entertain us.
