We need to include in our high school curricula information about how children and their parents can become citizens and the responsibilities and opportunities that citizenship offers.
Local governments should pass resolutions promoting citizenship; local officials should sponsor billboards urging immigrants to naturalize; U.S. citizenship workshops, such as those offered by the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials should be sponsored by local governments; finally, local governments should follow the example of voter registration, and have U.S. citizenship forms and guides on how to complete them available in all public office buildings.
Once our immigrants become politically integrated into our system, they will bring an energy and commitment to representative government that has so characterized American democracy.
