Japan Stands by Its Rice Ban: Japan remains opposed to opening its rice market despite the recent U.S.-European settlement on farm subsidies, a government spokesman said. Koichi Kato, Japan’s chief Cabinet secretary, made the remarks after a rift in the Cabinet over whether the government should review its near-total ban on rice imports. Foreign Minister Michio Watanabe suggested that Japan review its rice policy. Kato said the government is ready to compromise on other issues in the global trade talks, including concerns in the service and agricultural sectors and on tariff rates.
