Nation IN BRIEF : OREGON : Woman on Trial for Kidnaping Father
- Share via
A woman who took her Alzheimer’s-afflicted father from a nursing home and left him at an Idaho dog track suffers mental problems caused in part by child abuse, her attorney said. Sue Gifford, 41, is on trial for kidnaping, perjury and theft in what prosecutors claim was a plot to steal her father’s pension checks and Social Security. Her attorney, Wilbur Smith, told a federal judge in Hillsboro, Ore., that Gifford believed John Kingery, 83, let her use his money to make up for years of neglect and abuse. She said she left her father at the track because she could no longer cope with his illness. She could get more than six years in prison. Kingery died last month at a Kentucky nursing home.
