Alberto Tomba of Italy scored his first World Cup victory of the season at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, winning the slalom and picking up enough points to take the overall lead in the standings.
Tomba’s winning total was 1 minute 38.65 seconds. Kjetil Andre Aamodt of Norway and Thomas Stangassinger of Austria tied for second place, both at 1:39.19.
