And for Those Who Can’t Get to Washington

In terms of lifestyle and distance, Burbank is a long way from Washington, D.C.
Yet, San Fernando Valley Democrats plan to be in sync tonight with the nation’s capital as they celebrate at their “People’s Inaugural Ball.”
The gala black tie optional event will be held at the International Assn. of Machinists Hall, 2600 W. Victory Blvd., at 6 p.m.
“This is something for everybody who can’t make it to Washington,” said Alan Zimmerman, one of the event’s planners and a volunteer with the San Fernando Valley Democratic party.
The cost is $35 for dinner and entertainment.
Earlier in the day at 3:15 p.m., “Bells of Hope” will peal on the steps of the County Municipal Courts building in Van Nuys as a symbolic gesture to unite the country. President-elect Bill Clinton will simultaneously be ringing a replica of the Liberty Bell in Washington.
“The President-elect has asked us, as a nation, to come together for one brief moment,” Zimmerman said.
Zimmerman said that anyone who wants to participate can bring their bells, or any other noisemaker, to the courts building at 14400 Erwin St. School and church bells in the area will also chime at the same time.
